What is the GOTS label?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
The GOTS label is an international label for organic textiles. It guarantees an ecological and socially responsible mode of production. It also applies quality requirements.
What does the label guarantee?
The environment
GOTS is above all an ecological label. This label indicates that the textile fibers come from organic farming.
GOTS requires establishing a sustainability plan that takes into account water and energy consumption as well as waste management. It takes into account, among other things, maximum emission standards into water during textile production.
The label always indicates that the products are composed of at least 70% organic textile fibers. The label specifies a percentage when it is between 70 and 95%. If the label does not mention any percentage, this means that the product contains more than 95% organic textile fibers.
This label applies criteria for resistance to shrinkage during washing and drying and color stability under perspiration, washing, wet and dry rubbing, and exposure to light. These criteria are based on ISO (International Standards Organization) standards.
The finished product cannot contain any pesticide residue or heavy metals such as lead or cadmium. Genetically modified organisms cannot be used.
The social
The label only takes into account working conditions during textile processing.
The social criteria for textile processing are based on ILO (International Labor Organization) conventions and include, among other things, a ban on forced or compulsory labor, freedom of association and the right to collective consultation, safe working conditions. and hygienic standards, a ban on child labor, discrimination, physical abuse or other forms of intimidation. Salaries and number of working hours must at least meet national legal requirements, unless they exceed industry standards.
Producers receive neither minimum price nor fair trade premium for their products.
